'Ghetto Punk Romance' by Rainstar Productions

(London, UK) First Edit

We are Rainstar Productions/Boutique, a film production company based in London's Notting Hill. We shot on the Red Epic in the beginning of October on location in Notting Hill. We are proud to have had an amazing crew and cast with key players such as Will Pugh (DoP), Alexia Giorgi & Jack Pirie (Producers), Edward McLiam and Tilly Standing in our lead roles,  Simon Blackhall & Gabriela Montaraz as our kissing couple and wonderful Pawel Stec as our editor. Thanks to Assya London (http://assyalondon.com) we had a brilliant jeweler as a location and the fantastic postproduction house 'Onsight' (http://www.onsight.co.uk) gave this film its wonderful grade.

First cut: Producers notes for the filmmakers

  • Tarrantino infected music is cool and funny, but is it perhaps too on the nose? Could you try something else, something that feels British and 2012?

good job but I don't like the acting sorry. and work a bit on the grading.

Hey there Guy Ritchie :) I really like it but considering the fact that you had a Red Epic at your disposal you could have done a better job at the cinematography part of the film. Overall, I liked the Lock, Stock humour and style but I would lose the kiss shot, it doesn't fit somehow.
    All the best.

I disagree with the below statement. I think the acting was brilliant. Good short all round.

Like the styling, but undecided about acting. Is the music score not infringing very near the original?

Loved the script, not too sure about the choice in actors....need them to be a little more rough like they've done this before (robbing stores)... could have been shot a little later in the day, during the hustle of bustle of people going home from work and meeting up with loved ones. This was the picture I got when reading the original script.

I really liked it. I liked the chemistry between the leads, and the slow motion direction. The music didn't seem to fit too well, but that's just being picky. Maybe one too many "Yeeaaahs" for me!

But a great mini little story, with some really good camera moves and sound design.

I think this short is successful in two very important respects: first, I felt I was standing on the street with this couple for two minutes of their pedestrian lives while they were unaware of me (technically, I suppose, the mark of clever direction) and second, when the film ends cutting to the necklace overlaid with the actor's voice I want to follow the story into the next frame. The way you have composed a story that is both self contained and a hook for scenes to come is very skilfully done. Strong work!

Well put together. All around very good audio, music and performances.

The rhythm is the only part that is not quite right to me. By this I mean the lack of urgency as the moment approaches and his over emphasis on the 30/60/90 seconds. I want to experience that increasing urgency through the edit, but I don't want the characters to feel it. If you could create that conflict by way of your edit I think you'll have a more dynamic result. I think the slow mo kiss is cute but undermines the urgency and in light of the opening shots may be overkill.
Otherwise not much else to change.

Really liked the pace of this film. Also thought the two actors were confident, believable and conveyed the story line in short period of time.

Loved this - even tho the orig script struck me as pretty lame. Can't decide btwn this one and MIAMI version- wonder if the guy should not be a bit nerdy and being LED by stronger badass girl for another dimension of DRAMA and tension though?

    Michael W. Penny (Thursday, 08 November 2012 22:52)

Strong film! Liked it. Well shot and interesting editing techniques that make the film stand apart from many others.

The only note is I felt that each time he looks at his watch to say 90/60/30 seconds, the pace falls off. There IS a great spark between these two characters and I like the way they go back and forth with their quick witted dialogue, but then each time there is a "time check", they fall silent for 3-5 seconds or whatever the length of time is. In my opinion, if you could tighten up the length of screen time between each time check beat, the flow of their witty banter will be better maintained. I liked what Evan in post #16 says above about creating urgency to bring the plot to it's boiling point, so maybe our two ideas are linked in that way...? Give it a try and see how it feels to you?

I have no problem with the colouring. I like the natural feel, as Revedin mentions above, it really feels like we're just walking past these two on the street, can hear what they're talking about, and our lives intersect for ~2 mins before we go our separate ways. It plays well!

I liked this one so much but thought the girl overacted a bit. Fun and quirky! I think that the framing of the kiss isn't working... is there another shot of it?

Excellent acting, voice over, cinematography. Grading is fine. Totally disagree with the 50 Kisses people: THE MUSIC IS PERFECT. And yes, it feels Guy Ritchie and a bit QT, but what is WRONG with that! Cheers on a very nicely polished piece.

Fun and cool! I thought the music was a great fit - it gave leafy london and a pretty couple a twisted edge by association...
